POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Engine House Mechanic
FLSA: Non-exempt
RETIREMENT: Railroad Retirement
FT or PT: Full time
POSITION REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Locomotives & Rolling Stock
POSITION PURPOSE: The Engine House Mechanic’s primary purpose is to assist the Engine house Foreman in preparing locomotives for daily service, conduct periodic locomotive inspections, running repairs and maintenance to locomotives as required, trouble shoot locomotive systems, repair and test air brake valves, and other duties as directed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Perform locomotive periodic inspections, complying with FRA regulations.
- Repair and test locomotive and railcar brake valves.
- Repair and test locomotive appliances.
- Perform running repairs in accordance with FRA regulations and company policies.
- Keep workplace clean and orderly.
- Maintain cosmetic appearance of SRC’s operational locomotives.
- Comply with instructions provided by supervisor or designees.
- Assist with preparing locomotives for fire-up and daily operation.
- Fill locomotives with sand, water, and fuel as well as stocks locomotive cabs with needed supplies.
- Operate machinery such as but not limited to forklifts, telehandlers, skid-steer loader, backhoe.
- Remove and replace defective parts as required
- Perform additional duties as required.
PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS:
- Ability to identify parts and materials appropriate for application.
- Demonstrates understanding of FRA regulations regarding periodic steam locomotive inspection and compliance.
- Demonstrates understanding of steam locomotive appliances and systems.
- Demonstrates understanding of locomotive and railcar air brake systems.
- Anticipates need for materials and makes requisitions in a timely manner.
- Seeks instruction when needed to complete inspections and repairs properly.
- Shows up to work on time, properly attired and prepared to work.
- Enthusiastically takes on responsibility and aids team members to accomplish department goals.
- Works safely and efficiently and maintains a clean and orderly workplace.
- Complies with instructions from superiors and works independently when required.
- Complies with all policies outlined in the Employee Handbook or supplemental policy or guideline memos from the President.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum two (2) years experience as an engine house helper, or a combination of comparable industry experience.
- Familiarity with principles of steam locomotive and steam locomotive systems operation.
- Familiarity with railroad air brake systems.
- Enthusiasm for the company and its mission.
- Ability to carry out verbal or written instructions.
- Proficient in the use of hand and power tools.
- Ability to pass FRA required drug/alcohol screening and hearing and vision tests required for T&E operations employees.
- Organizational skills and careful attention to detail.
- Willingness to work at heights on ladders, scaffolds, man lifts or on top of rail mounted equipment.
- Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Willingness and desire to learn.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Full-time, minimum forty (40) hours per week. Shift has regular variations due to changing projects, priorities, and other factors.
- Work is both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions during all seasons.
- Work requires regular social contact with Team Members, customers, and vendors.
- Occasional exposure to very hot or very cold temperatures.
- Frequent exposure in a shop setting to soot, dust, oil, paint, and other potentially hazardous substances.
- Frequent work in confined spaces.
- Frequent need for personal protective equipment.
- Extended periods of walking or standing.
- Frequent lifting more than 50 pounds.
- Will be subject to background check and possibly drug/alcohol testing.
