POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE:  Boilermaker

FLSA: Non-exempt

POSITION REPORTS TO:  Boiler Shop Foreman

POSITION PURPOSE:  Strasburg Rail Road Company is seeking to fill a position in our Boiler Shop with a team-oriented person possessing a strong work ethic, natural curiosity, and a desire to learn. The selected individual will have experience as a welder, fabricator, or mechanic. This is an opportunity to work in a unique facility, performing highly-skilled, custom fabrication work. Final job description and rate of pay will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

The skills employed by this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Welding ferrous and non-ferrous metals using SMAW/GTAW/FCAW welding processes.
  • Brazing/Soldering ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  • Oxy-fuel/plasma cutting metals.
  • Forming/cutting/grinding/bending metal using manual and power tools.
  • Operation of machinery like fork-lifts, telehandlers, manlifts, etc.
  • Pipe/steam fitting.
  • Rigging/lifting using overhead crane.
  • Reading/interpreting mechanical drawings.
  • Operating basic machine tools (drill press, band saw, etc.)

Experience in the following areas will help you stand out in the hiring process:

  • ASME or AWS welding certification or experience.
  • Prior experience working in a railroad environment.
  • Experience with machine tool operation (lathe, milling machine; manual or CNC)
  • Millwright experience.
  • CAD or CAM software skills.
  • Hydraulics.
  • Electrical.
  • Knowledge of how steam locomotives work.
  • Familiarity with Federal Railroad Administration regulations.
  • Familiarity with ASME or NBIC codes.
  • Formal training/degree specializing in any of the primary skills listed above.
  • Computer knowledge, including Microsoft Office products.
Position details:
  • Salary $15-$30/hr based on experience.
  • Full-time, minimum forty (40) hours per week. Regular shop hours are 6:30 am to 3:00 pm. Shift has regular variations due to changing projects, priorities, and other factors.
  • Work is primarily indoors, though many duties will require occasional outdoor work in all weather conditions in all seasons.
  • Work requires regular social contact with Team Members, customers, and vendors.
  • Occasional exposure to very hot or very cold temperatures.
  • Frequent exposure in a shop setting to soot, dust, oil, paint, and other potentially hazardous substances.
  • Frequent work in areas of restricted movement.
  • Frequent need for personal protective equipment.
  • Extended periods of walking or standing.
  • Frequent lifting more than 50 pounds.
  • Employment may be subject to background check and drug testing (pre-employment and random). ​​​​​​​
