POSITION DESCRIPTION
 
POSITION TITLE: Cook 1
 
FSLA: Non-exempt
 
POSITION REPORTS TO: Food Services Manager
 
POSITION PURPOSE: The Cook 1 will generate dishes from scratch for a variety of locations at the Strasburg Rail Road, including the Café and the Dining Car. The purpose is to provide a fine dining experience that complements that historic steam railroading context.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Assist to generate dishes from scratch for a variety of locations throughout Café and the Dining Car.
• Work the grill, sauté, use convection ovens, operate a meat slicer.
• Support the food service operation to provide excellent meal and snack options to Guests.
• Properly store food items at appropriate temperatures.
• Rotate stock items as per established procedures.
• Restock kitchen for subsequent shifts.
• Ensure that the food prep area and kitchen are cleaned and sanitized at the end of your shift.
• Engages in casual conversation with passengers.
• Cooperate with other staff as a team.
• Work consistently to provide guests a world-class railroad experience.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience as an advanced line cook.
• Desire to push oneself to the next level in career and culinary vocation.
• Familiarity with general cooking terms.
• Ability to follow directions and read and execute a recipe in a timely and efficient manner.
• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Strong work ethic.
• Exemplary customer service skills.
• Desire to exceed Guest expectations.
• Ability to build relationships with colleagues and Guests to ensure a positive work environment and experience.
• Basic knowledge of best practices in food service.
• Ability to remain calm and work well under pressure.
• High school diploma or GED.
• ServSafe certification preferred.
• Server/Seller RAMP certification from PA Liquor Control Board is a plus.
 
WORKING CONDITIONS:
· Hours revolve primarily around an established train, event, and café schedules.
· Evening and weekend hours are expected, as well as work on the occasional holiday.
· Mostly indoor work.
· Required uniform including apron, jacket, and anti-slip footwear.
· Exposure to hazardous situations and conditions that may produce cuts or minor burns.
· Exposure to hot and cold temperatures, such as when working near ovens, griddles, and friers or when retrieving food from freezers.
· Sometimes wear personal protective equipment such as gloves.
· Work physically near others.
· Work near contaminants and hazardous equipment.
· Sometimes work in a noisy and distracting environment.
· Occasional work onboard a moving train. Walking between cars is necessary.
· Duties require frequent standing and walking.
· Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
