POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Painter – part time

FLSA: Non-exempt

POSITION REPORTS TO: Mechanical Shop Superintendent

POSITION PURPOSE: A Painter’s primary purpose is to prepare surfaces for the application of paint, varnish, and other industrial coatings. A Painter makes repairs to surfaces prior to coating applications, selects proper products for their application, determines the number of coats and application method to achieve the desired finish.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Remove existing coatings and prepare surfaces for new coatings by scraping, cleaning, sanding, blasting or the use of chemical strippers.
  • Make repairs to surfaces by patching, filling, welding, and grinding prior to the application of coatings.
  • Select appropriate coatings and application methods for the surface to be coated and the desired finish texture.
  • Maintain paint spray booth, spray painting equipment and specialty PPE in good working condition.
  • Keep workplace clean and orderly.
  • Comply with instructions provided by supervisor or designees.
  • Operate machinery such as but not limited to forklifts, telehandlers, skid-steer loader, backhoe to move items to and from prep/paint areas.
  • Operate hand-held power tools such as sanders, buffers, angle grinders, drills, etc.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS:

  • Selects proper coatings for jobs and applies them using suitable methods.
  • Prepares surfaces thoroughly and appropriately prior to application of coatings.
  • Minimizes spills and overspray to prevent waste of coating products and ensure only specified surfaces are coated.
  • Maintains all assigned equipment in good repair, ready for use.
  • Shows up to work on time, properly attired and prepared to work.
  • Enthusiastically aids Team Members to accomplish department goals.
  • Works safely and efficiently and maintains a clean and orderly workplace.
  • Complies with instructions from superiors and works independently when required.
  • Complies with all policies outlined in the Employee Handbook or supplemental policy or guideline memos from the President.
  • Works well with others

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum two (2) years previous experience as a painter or in the application of industrial coatings.
  • Familiarity with the use, care and maintenance of spray-painting equipment.
  • Solid knowledge of commercial and industrial painting techniques.
  • Willingness to work at heights on ladders, scaffolds, man lifts or on top of rail mounted equipment.
  • Enthusiasm for the company and its mission.
  • Ability to carry out verbal or written instructions.
  • Familiarity with basic hand and power tool operation.
  • Possession of valid driver’s license.
  • Organizational skills and careful attention to detail.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Positive attitude and personal confidence in management
  • Willingness and desire to learn.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Part-time, approximately (24) hours per week. Regular shop hours are 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Shift has regular variations due to changing projects, priorities, and other factors.
  • Work is primarily indoors, though many duties will require occasional outdoor work in all weather conditions during all seasons.
  • Work requires regular social contact with Team Members, customers, and vendors.
  • Occasional exposure to very hot or very cold temperatures.
  • Frequent exposure in a shop setting to soot, dust, oil, paint, and other potentially hazardous substances.
  • Frequent work in confined spaces.
  • Frequent need for personal protective equipment.
  • Extended periods of walking or standing.
  • Frequent lifting in excess of 50 pounds.
